Abstract
Technology is integral to mental health-care practice. Advanced technologies have the potential to reduce mental health-care disparities, improve treatment outcomes, and facilitate multidisciplinary collaboration. They can also lead to advances in mental health treatment, ushering in a new era of mental health care. While research on the use of advanced technologies in systemic family therapy lags behind the rest of the mental health-care field, conclusions can still be drawn from the extant literature for evidence-based systemic family therapy. Three advanced technologies show the greatest potential for impact in systemic family therapy: teleconferencing with a particular emphasis on videoconferencing, mHealth, or the use of mobile technologies and biofeedback. Other advanced technologies such as gaming software, virtual reality, voice assistant, and smart speaker technologies are also identified as technologies that are rapidly developing and that hold promise for impact in systemic family therapy. Clinicians are encouraged to look to other fields, some of which may not be related to mental health care, for advanced technologies that may have use in systemic family therapy. Responsible use of technology includes conducting research on how technology is used in practice.
