Abstract

Like many other passages in the Book of Job, the verses with which Job begins his second poetic speech in chapter 6 present numerous exegetical difficulties. In this paper I propose that reading 6,5-7 as a sharp riposte to Eliphaz's vision (4,12-21) can help to illuminate some of the more puzzling terms and expressions in these verses, and also provide the basis for a new understanding of the enigmatic expression in 6,6b that has frequently been translated as “Is there any taste in the white of an egg?.
