Abstract
The aquation of tris(malonato)chromate(III) anion was studied in the dark at 25-40° in 0·10-2·0 F HClO4 (μ = 0·2-2·0, NaClO4). The observed pseudo-first order rate constant kobs was found to be dependent on the hydrogen-ion concentration: kobs = k2[H+] over the entire range of [H+]. At 25° k2 = 3·60 × 10-4 l.mole-1/sec Ea = 24·0 kcal/mole-1, and log PZ = 13·1. A mechanism in which a slow protonation and one-end displacement step followed by a fast attack on the intermediate by a water molecule is proposed. The reaction is not affected by diffused light. © 1968.
