Abstract
Naturalistic research, in which persons labeled mentally retarded express their perceptions of intimacy and sexuality, is reviewed. Statements which interpret these aspects of life primarily as positive and essential are categorized according to their ascribed meanings, and are contrasted with professional practices which typically do not allow for privacy and the expression of sexuality. Data on normal sexual development and beneficial effects of importance of touch and sexual expression in human development. One is urged to re-examine the ideas about 'sex and the mentally retarded', as well as the professional practices and attitudes.
