Abstract
In this review, emphasis is placed on solubility parameters and the development of the concept as it has grown over the years far beyond the limitations originally imposed by the theory of regular solutions. Some of the reasons for the applicability of the solubility parameter concept are described. Topics include: solubility characteristics of solvents and polymers; pure and applied assumptions, including a volume change on mixing, the geometric mean assumption, and interaction energies; the van der Waals equation and free volume effects; more formal treatments of solutions; and practical characterization of polymers and solvents.
