Abstract
Reinforced concrete structures constitute a major portion of today's construction. The trend towards the use of reinforced concrete is more pronounced in both North America and Europe than in other parts of the world. Increased use of reinforced concrete necessarily requires installation of more and more reinforcing bars (re-bar). This paper presents a concept for process-oriented planning for the fabrication and placement of re-bar. Feature-based frameworks for design and planning are established to allow the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the development of a CAD-integrated process planning system for the placement of re-bar. A prototype system for feature-based and process-oriented re-bar placement planning is presented. The prototype system is implemented on a PC-486 by integrating AutoCAD, dBASE III PLUS and LEVEL5 OBJECT software. Finally, field testing of the process planning model in a real-world construction project and the results of the study are discussed.
