Abstract
This article discusses leadership in terms of two metaphors-military battle and friendship, and illustrates how these different metaphors provide contrasting conceptions of leadership and leader-follower relationships. An argument is made for the importance of a friendship metaphor in reframing our conception of the theory and practice of leadership as well as in shaping a more ethical and humane society.
