Abstract
We all know the importance of first impressions, but faculty often don't use the first day of class to make the best first impression they can. The idea of "Rock the First Day" was developed by two University of Missouri professors to encourage faculty to do more on the first day of class than talk about the syllabus and let class out early. Research on the first day of class demonstrates the importance of moving beyond a description of the syllabus or a first day lecture and using the time to create a shared experience that sets a positive tone for learning for the rest of the course. We also offer ideas for Rocking the First Day.
