Abstract
This article discusses community development initiatives in the United States and the United Kingdom. It discusses the genesis of community development and its translation into declining urban areas. Using case studies of two urban revitalization approaches, City Challenge in the UK and Community Development Corporations in the US, it describes the evolution of project initiatives from strictly bricks-and-mortar to the inclusion of social services. A need for social services is seen as essential to such projects both in the developed and the developing world.
