Abstract
The history of the use of vegetable oils for fuels and lubricants is outlined. The benefits of using soya oil in industrial lubricants are described. US legislation promoting the use of environmentally friendly products is outlined. Advances in formulations technology and the development of genetically modified soya beans are creating new opportunities for economical bio based lubricants and greases. The future for bio based lubricants in the USA is considered.
