Abstract
The purpose of this study was to test the reliability and convergent validity of the Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory-20 (MFI-20) and the Medical Outcomes Study Short Form-36 (SF-36) in operationalizing fatigue among female caregivers of male dialysis patients. Forty-five spouses or first-degree female caregivers in northern and eastern Iowa were administered the 2 measures, The data were analyzed by regressing, in turn, the 8 subscales of the SF-36 backwards on the 5 subscales of the MFI-20. Scores on 4 of the 5 MFI-20 subscales accounted for a moderate amount of variance on the physical domain of the SF-36 subscales. Fatigue among caregivers and limitations of generalization are addressed.
