Abstract

The purpose of this qualitative study was to listen to teachers who have graduated from a specialized science minor program at the University of Northern Iowa and learn what their current experiences could share with the current undergraduate program. The nine participants who were interviewed were all graduates of this program. They were chosen by the researcher out of a larger group of PEMST graduates with respect to gender, year graduated, and science specialist versus generalist teaching positions. Each semi-structured interview was transcribed to print and later analyzed for common trends in the data. The results of the study showed that overall, the program at UNI has been largely successful in accomplishing its goals. One of these goals being the teachers' perseverance in hands-on science teaching. They exhibited confidence in their abilities to teach science and assume leadership roles in science-related areas. The graduates of this program also shared obstacles associated with teaching science. They were often hired as science specialists and occasionally struggled with science content knowledge. They also called for help in the management of hands-on science classrooms accommodating the array of students' needs. In spite of these challenges, the graduates of the program exhibited persistence in the teaching of hands-on science.
