Abstract
This study used a naturalistic observation technique to determine the amount of gender segregation occurring in children. Subjects were a group of first and second graders and a group of third through fifth graders observed during recess at the Price Lab School. We examined the children's style of play, the size of the playgroups, and the gender of the members of the groups to determine the age at which more gender segregation occurs.
The younger group of children was found to be more segregated than the older group. Gender differences were also found in the size of playgroups and play size.
