Abstract
This research will focus on the presentation of certain historical events or time periods in Ukrainian primary school history textbooks. It is especially important to show what is focused upon and what is conveniently left out of the texts. The teaching of a culture's history to schoolchildren reinforces that society's values, beliefs, and even prejudices. Nationalism plays an important role in this process. In Ukraine this process plays the role of reinforcing a unique Ukrainian culture and destiny that evolved separately from Russian culture. A sense of Ukrainian nation-ness is created in this atmosphere.
This research is being carried out by using the few scholarly articles that mention the subject and through the use of Ukrainian primary school history textbooks. The essay will focus on the Kieven Rus' time period (970-1240) and its significance in Ukrainian history.
