Abstract
This study examined differences between suicidal and nonsuicidal adolescent psychiatric inpatients on a new self-report measure of psychopathology, the Adolescent Psychopathology Scale (APS; Reynolds, 1998). Boys and girls did not differ significantly in age, t(37) = . 89, Q = ns. The sample also included a fairly large number of European American participants. The most common diagnoses for the sample were mood disorders, followed by conduct and oppositional disorders. All participants completed the APS, the Linehan's Suicidal Behavior Questionnaire (SBQ; Linehan, 1981), and seven other self-report instruments. Patients with no or brief suicidal ideation, as assessed with the SBQ and review of the medical records, were assigned to the low suicide-risk group (N = 17; 43. 6%). Patients who were admitted because of serious suicide plan or attempt(s) were assigned to the suicide-risk group (N = 22; 56. 4%). The selected APS Clinical and Content scales were useful in differentiating the suicidal from the nonsuicidal participants.
