Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the validity of the Beck Depression Inventory (BDl-11; Beck et al., 1996), the Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS; Beck et al., 1994), and the Reasons for Living Inventory for Adolescents (RFL-A; Osman et al., 1998) in differentiating between psychiatric inpatient suicidal adolescents from nonsuicidal high school adolescents. The sample included an equal number of inpatient suicidal and high school nonsuicidal adolescents. We found that all three instruments differentiated between the groups. Further examination of these differences showed that only the BDl-11 (Wald = 27.3, Q < .001) and the RFL-A (Wald= 12.02, Q < .001) instruments predicted group membership; overall hit rate = 80.4%. Results of the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve analyses showed that the Area Under the Curve (AUC) index for the BDl-II was significantly higher that the AUC for the BHS.
