Abstract
Two studies were conducted to develop and validate a brief 14-item self-report measure, the Positive and Negative Suicide Ideation (PANS!) inventory, for assessing the frequency of positive and negative thoughts related to suicidal behavior. In Study 1, the initial 20 PANSI items were completed by 150 men and 300 women. We conducted an exploratory factor analyses and retained 14 items. In Study II, we conducted a confirmatory factor analysis to validate the fit of the one-factor and the oblique 2-factor models to data from 84 men and 202 women. The oblique 2-factor model provided an excellent fit to the sample data. We also examined preliminary evidence of concurrent and predictive validity. Overall, these findings suggested that this new inventory is a well-developed self-report measure for assessing the frequency of positive and negative thoughts related to suicidal behavior.
