Examining Erickson's Psychosocial Stages of Development: Ego Identity Status and Romantic Commitment
Document Type
Research Paper
Abstract
Erikson's psychosocial stages of development predict a sequential pattern of development throughout the lifespan. This study examined the transition from adolescence to adulthood, specifically focusing on ego identity status and the relation to intimacy in adulthood. Forty students (19 engaged, 21 uncommitted) completed the Extended Objected Measure of the Ego Identity Status (EOM-EIS; Grotevant and Adams, 1984). Multivariate Analyses of Variance (MANOVA) indicated that the engaged individuals did indeed have higher achieved scores than the non-engaged counterparts. In addition, the engaged respondents also showed lower moratorium scores then the control group. These results were consistent for both the ideological and interpersonal subscales of the test, as well as the overall global identity measure, supporting Erikson's theory of sequential development. Future research should incorporate a larger, more representative sample and utilize a longitudinal design.
