Abstract
Eleanor Rosch's idea of prototypes, developed in the early '70's, has since become the dominant approach to concepts. However. no one knows what prototypes are or how they are constructed. The present study is an attempt to investigate the nature of prototypes. Subjects from University of Northern Iowa Introduction to Psychology courses were asked to: (1) name as many examples as they could for the categories vehicle and furniture , or (2) describe their images involving situations with vehicles and furniture
