Abstract

After a days-long battle has decimated their battalion, six Red Army soldiers find temporary refuge from weather and war.

Between 1941 and 1945, over two thousand young women enlisted in the Red Army and trained as snipers. They served in front line combat, fighting alongside their male comrades to expel the invading Nazi hordes. The Moth-Eaters is excerpted from a longer work based on some of their experiences.

The title comes from Book IX of Homer's Odyssey, in which Odysseus recounts his time in the land of the Lotophagi (the Lotus-eaters).
