Abstract
To understand Iowa one must understand wrestling. The Hawkeye state’s deeply held passion for the sport was taken to new heights with the emergence of wrestling phenom Dan Gable. A fascinating character, Gable’s tale has only been told through a biographical lens rather than a historical one. This project explains Gable’s influence in Iowa and amateur wrestling by placing his story in a broader context. With the last major history of Iowa wrestling being published in 1981, this project provides a much-needed update to the previous literature. It shows how Gable built on a rich tradition and cemented Iowa’s place at the center of the wrestling world.
