Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to determine if psychiatric clients admitted to the Adult Day Treatment Program at the Abbe Center for Community Mental Health made progress on individualized treatment goals developed using a GAS (Goal Attainment Scaling) system . Research subjects were 41 clients admitted to either the Intensive or Supportive Programs at the Abbe Center during a 1 year time period. Individualized treatment goals were developed for each client and measures of these goals took place upon admission to the program, at monthly intervals, at discharge from the program, and at 3 months post-discharge. Statistical analyses revealed that clients do make progress in identified individual treatment goals on a month-to-month basis and this improvement is maintained at 3 months post-discharge. Progress on treatment goals did not seem to be related to age, program type, educational level, and diagnosis with the exception of schizoaffective disorder. Clients appeared to make significant improvements in several categories of goals including: social skills, independence, understanding mental illness, least restrictive environment, decreasing hospitalizations, treatment compliance, goal-setting, anger/assertiveness, decreasing symptomatology, vocational, daily structure, social support/relationships, and self esteem. Further data need to be collected in order to determine a recommended length of stay in terms of treatment days/months. It is recommended that future research continue the use of individualized measures in conjunction with standardized measures of improvements, and that the data collection time period be extended to measure longer term effects of receiving Day Treatment/Partial Hospitalization services .
