Abstract
It is a pleasure to be here. I believe I had the honor of being here for the first Symposium, this is now the fourth. In addition, members of my staff have come to play various roles in the second and third symposia. So, I think we may have a relationship going that we will try to continue. The topic of the Symposium is a very critical one and I hope that in the next half hour to 45 minutes I can shed some light on why I think it is so important. The theme of this McElroy presentation is leadership.
I had the honor of working for six and a half years with someone who is, across the country, defined as a leader in children and family issues, Marianne Wright-Edelman. Furthermore, I have discovered that increasingly over the years as people stand up and introduce me, they call me a leader and I am trying to figure out what exactly it is that leadership means. Those of you in the audience who know me know that one of the ways I think about giving speeches is to force myself through some sort of exercise. The exercise I did this time was to think about leadership. You will figure out what the exercise is in a minute.
