Abstract
Programs are frequently viewed as the heart of YMCA activity. YMCAs seem to be "activity" centers with a never ending schedule of programs and events designed to include large numbers of young people on a daily basis. YMCAs are volunteer led organizations and it is not uncommon to hear those volunteers proudly recounting anecdotes about the wonderful youth programs that are offered to the community by their association. YMCA professionals, however, have the responsibility to temper and guide this natural enthusiasm to develop and implement "programs" based on their knowledge of human development needs of the youth in their community rather than the "marketing" concerns of adults. We must develop the professional integrity to look realistically at the reality of what is happening to all of the youth of our communities rather than just our present members and program participants
