Abstract
The 1991 National Youth Leadership Symposium moved the study of the youth serving organization profession toward better understandings of the developmental needs of its professional staff. The theme, "Common Ground for Professional Development", was used to focus the examination on educational needs that would be useful to all those engaged in the work of these organizations. Building on the agreement about needed professional competencies developed at the 1990 Symposium, the 1991 gathering moved on to improve understanding of how to better prepare for youth leadership roles. These are important activities to foster awareness, responsiveness, and advocacy to the youth leadership profession.
The Symposium series is dedicated to study and action that foster professionalism in the important arena of service to youth. The series of studies is moving through an inductive research process to contribute to an improved and more realistic definition of the work of professionals leading youth development programs.
