Abstract

The topic of my talk this evening is "Challenges to the Profession." We heard this afternoon about the challenge., presented by both the changing demographics and the changing realities of adolescence in this country. We will hear, over the course of the symposium, about the challenge., involved in designing and running more effective programs, recruiting, training and retaining volunteers, raising funds. Tonight, I would like to talk about a larger challenge, a challenge that will lead us to think about a word used earlier -- mission. I think that the primary challenge we have before us is to figure out how to sustain and capitalize on the current interest in youth development in this country. I propose that, if we are to meet this challenge, we must move quickly to offer a clear, precise, and unified definition of what youth development is.
