The UNI Literacy Clinic is part of the Literacy Education program within the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. The clinic serves children and adolescents (grades 1 to 12) with literacy learning needs as an after-school program at specific school sites in fall and spring semesters, and as a morning clinic program at school sites in the summer.

One-to-one tutoring is provided to clients by UNI students enrolled in the Advanced Literacy Practices course and the co-requisite Experience in Literacy: Tutoring course.

All reading tutors are supervised by University faculty and graduate assistants. The tutors conduct assessments and then implement an individually designed instructional program for each child. As their literacy skills progress, each child contributes a written work to the anthology for their clinic. Tutoring involves 30 contact hours. Children are referred by participating schools.

Literacy Clinic courses are part of a UNI student's coursework, at the undergraduate or graduate level, related to the State of Iowa Reading Endorsement (for both K-8 and 5-12 reading endorsements).
