Abstract
In the 1996 Fall issue of the linker, a publication from the Grant Wood Area Education Agency in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Robert Anthony suggested that if we circle all of the articles in our daily newspaper dealing with the world at large we might be surprised by the number of circles covering our paper. He also suggested that if we noted the number of minutes devoted to international news on our favorite nightly network news program, we might again be surprised. Anthony asserted that it is clear that we will be affected by global events throughout our lives and that it would be a terrible shame if a lack of global understanding also existed.
Shortly after putting that piece down, I picked up our local newspaper which featured a Knight-Ridder article on its front page entitled, "AMERICA: Who stole the dream?" by Donald L. Bartlett and James B. Steele (1996).
