Abstract
According to Education Week (July, 1991), one-quarter of state institutions of higher education and one-third of private colleges and universities are engaged in partnerships with elementary and secondary schools. Educators seem to feel a need to collaborate if we are to improve teacher preparation. Although partnerships between colleges and schools go back as far as the 1890s, educators interested in such arrangements have scant knowledge of what kind of partnerships have existed, what kind have survived, what kind have failed and what the impact has been on school reform.
