Abstract
Two-thirds of Iowa's 425 school districts enroll fewer than 750 students in grades kindergarten through 12. Nearly one-half enroll fewer than 500 students and 49, or 12%, enroll fewer than 250 students. Iowa's statistics on school districts closely mirror those of the United States where we find one-third of our nation's elementary and secondary age school children being educated in two-thirds of our nation's public school systems. The vast majority of these small school systems are located in rural areas that share the common demographics of small size, population sparsity and isolation. School statistics further indicate that small and rural schools have teaching faculties with fewer years of teaching experience, fewer advanced degrees, lower salaries and higher turnover rates. Few, if any, small rural school systems have close ongoing working relationships with teacher training institutions, yet a high percentage of new graduates find their first teaching positions in small rural schools.
