Abstract
Many professions stipulate stiff entrance requirements and limit the number of students who can be enrolled per year. It would appear that most colleges and universities have an open enrollment policy toward education majors. Are there stipulations on classroom availabilities, faculty-student ratio, grade point average or whether each candidate is suited mentally and/or physically to become a teacher? The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education Standards has had little effect on improving the quality of teacher preparation programs. In place of the present mass of standards, four standards were proposed. These alternative standards focus on adequate financial support, selective admission standards, a vigorous faculty and faculty involvement in the school.
