Abstract
While sitting in a breakfast booth in a quiet northwestern Iowa community, I overheard an elderly businessman say, "The more I learn about it the more excited I become!" He was talking about sailboat racing, but regardless of the topic, I was impressed with his excitement, his joy in discovery, his modeling of lifelong learning. Are not he and others open to new learning throughout their lives one of the primary goals of education at all levels? What will our students need to be able to know, do and be like as a result of education in our schools? Being able to answer that question by developing learner outcomes is crucial in our changing society if we are to prepare our students to be successful anywhere in the world. One of the frequent learner attributes we desire in all our graduates, just as for the man in the coffee shop who had discovered sailboat racing, is that they become lifelong learners.
