Abstract

In 1975 under the leadership of former Governor Robert Ray, the people of Iowa opened their state, their cities, their doors, and their hearts to the refugees from Southeast Asia. Since then more than 10,000 refugees and immigrants resettled in Iowa and called it their home. Coming from less fortunate nations and circumstances, they remind us of our blessings and are supremely grateful for the things we take for granted. Like us, these refugees have a strong belief in freedom, a strong work ethic, a strong orientation to community service, a strong sense of justice and compassion for the needy, and a strong will for success. But the refugees also carried with them their handicap of not speaking English, not understanding the American culture, and the memories of suffering, death, hopelessness, stagnation, separation, nostalgia, and starvation. Iowa has cared physically, and accepted them as neighbors and friends. However, one of the areas that needs to be addressed is the question of role models.
