Abstract
Choice is a prevalent concept in our educational systems. The freedoms our Constitution provides enable the exercise of personal choices. This seems to be the paramount goal established and promoted by our schools. A central theme at the core of choice is the notion of freedom. It is therefore suggested that all expectations and standards of performance for people of color (Asians, Blacks, Hispanics, Native Americans) in education must be based on values supportive of the understanding of self, individual freedoms, and the right of choice. The standards these values reflect should ultimately become the foundation for enhancing the individual's self-esteem.
