Abstract
In the early 1970s I was involved in writing a course of study to address the requirements of human relations for educators in Iowa. This course was based on the assumption that cultural pluralism is not only a fact of life, but a valued resource. It was our intent to prepare teachers to utilize their understanding and knowledge of diversity to provide positive learning experiences for children. I vividly remember the confrontations with class members who could not see the relevance of such issues as bias, human rights, and discrimination.
