Focus Area One

Abstract

The topic of this conference, "Strengthening the Partnership Between Schools, Service Agencies and Families in Meeting the Needs of Students At Risk," highlights one of the most frustrating issues facing service providers today. How can we devise ways which will guarantee essential services to students and families so that they are enabled to become more productive members of society? This focus area addressed the issues associated with coordinating services between schools and agencies for the benefit of students and families at risk.

The five papers in this section address the coordination of services from the perspectives of both service agencies and school personnel. In addition to providing a variety of rationale for the need to coordinate services, the papers also reflect many of the frustrations and the isolation often felt by individuals within both schools and agencies as they strive to meet the needs of students and families at risk. These papers offer some insights into the problems which must be addressed if we are to successfully coordinate services. This introduction summarizes the conference dialogue in which each of these writers participated.
