Abstract

At-risk students need support from every sector of our society. The number of young people who can be considered at risk is increasing steadily. This is not a problem which can be alleviated with a quick fix. We cannot vaccinate our children against the economic, psychological, and social perils of divorce, death, substance abuse, poverty, learning difficulties, and teenage pregnancy.

At best, our society can work together to form a network which provides a supportive structure for all students and particularly those students who are deemed to be at risk. While Iowa's legal definition of at risk clearly defines the parameters of those situations which place at child at risk, many practitioners believe all students are at risk at some time during their academic career. Therefore, it is important to create programs which positively touch the lives of all children while focusing on those students legally deemed at risk.
