Abstract

With dwindling resources, more responsibilities, and higher expectations being given to schools, it is not only prudent but imperative that the total community become partners in the educational process. To accomplish this end, our panel deemed it necessary to open the doors to the schools, shed the mysticism of the pedagogic process, and encourage reciprocity as teachers go to the homes, parents to the schools, students to the community, and community partners to the schools.

To establish successful partnerships, it is vital to look beyond the "volunteers in the classroom" stereotype of community involvement and look toward working collaboratively with a plethora of community persons in both the private and public sector to communicate perspectives on leadership, vision, goals, quality, and resources.

For partnerships to be put to best advantage, this panel saw a need for commitments for the partnership movement from the Iowa Legislature, the Iowa Department of Education, local school districts, the individual schools, and private/public sector partners. Further, we endorsed the formalizing and/or legitimizing of partnerships after they proceeded from an informal coupling.
