Focus Area Five
Abstract
The major issue addressing the school is improving the school performance of all children, not the narrow perspective of improving the performance of at-risk students. The focus must be on changing the cultural norms of the school which have unintentionally contributed to the alienation of many students from the system and indeed may have had a causal relationship to students' lack of academic achievement.
To improve school performance for all students, all staff must focus on the ways the school can and must meet two of what Dr. William Glasser identifies as basic human needs: the need for belonging, and the need for competence/influence. Several presently acceptable cultural norms in schools must be drastically changed to positively affect these two basic needs. School personnel need some templates or frames of reference to make specific changes in the students' learning context. A well conceptualized example of such a template is a clear and deep understanding of human behavior such as explained by third force theorists like Dr. Glasser.
