Focus Area Five
Abstract
Our nation, overshadowed by large scale transportation problems, an over-crowded environment, and a "gloom-and-doom" economic forecast, is consumed by a myriad of issues which compete with education for attention, time, and financial support. Yet, today's youth are clearly the adults of tomorrow and unless basic skills are mastered, these individuals will be a burden to tomorrow's society. While it is easy to cast attention to the masses of failures-at-risk students on the pedagogical merry-go-round- educators must readjust their vision so a myopic orientation is not undertaken. It is absolutely essential we do not lose sight of one of the most important principles of all basic educational successes. That is, successful educational programs, no matter how large or small, are predicated upon the focus and attention to the individual. While there is no generic remedy for teaching large numbers of students who need attention, it is essential to focus our efforts on the characteristics and needs of each individual youngster. To be successful, each youngster's capabilities must be assessed, diagnosed and evaluated. The professional educator tries plan A with Stacy, strategy B with Chris, and intervention C with Evangeline. The efficacy of such strategies are charted, modified, updated, and altered to meet the needs of the individual student. In short, the foci of one child at a time, one day at a time is absolutely essential.
