Focus Area Five
Abstract
In the 1980's, the nation's schools came under scrutiny. Effective schools became a national focus. Leaders in the movement, such as Ron Edmonds and Larry Lezotte, shared with us the elements necessary in making education effective for all students. One of these elements, or correlates, is school-home relations. The home school component that unites these institutions in the education of the whole child is vital to student success. It is an important consideration in the programming for all special needs children. Yet, I would propose to you that it has no greater value anywhere than in the education of the at-risk student. Often these students are at-risk because of family or parental factors. These are parents who often have negative feelings about the school stemming from their own experience. The challenge for educators of at-risk students is to bring these parents into the school community in a non-threatening way and to assist them by providing the skills necessary for parenting and offering a family support system. It is believed that parents need to understand why their child is at-risk. If they lack the skills to correct the situation, it becomes the school's responsibility to assist the parents. My position is that schools across Iowa and the Midwest are answering this challenge with programs that involve the family in an on-going way.
