Abstract

Health programs which serve school-age youth are currently provided through a segmented and fragmented system. A significant disparity exists between health needs and available services. Consumer-oriented health and human service providers recognize that school-age youth - those individuals most at risk of receiving fragmented care - are readily accessible while involved in the school system.

However, health services in the schools which address school related activities such as immunizations, minor injuries and illnesses, and athletic physicals, although involving school and health personnel, often fail to recognize primary and preventive health needs of at-risk children.
