Focus Area Two
Abstract
If the goal of education is to develop productive citizens who are life- long learners, then parents must be nurtured as partners in the educational process to attain that goal. Educators recognize the need to have parents involved in the schools. They are also painfully aware of many families’ reluctance to take an active role in education. To begin to deal with parent involvement, schools must seriously look at the messages they send to parents. Human service agencies can be major contributors to helping the process when schools collaborate with parents to benefit the family unit. However, agencies also receive mixed messages from the schools and that makes true collaboration difficult.
