Abstract

Schools and service agencies work with at-risk students who come from a wide variety of family backgrounds. "At risk" is an extremely broad term and encompasses a wide variety of student needs. "At-risk" students can be defined as those who are at risk of not getting what they need in life to help them succeed. These can be students with family economic hardships, unmet emotional needs, those who are physically abused, students with learning, physical or mental disabilities, also those who have cultural disabilities. On a broader scale, one could say students are at risk if they do not question, challenge and communicate effectively; if they are not assertive, caring, loving individuals; if they are unable to accept change; and if they have not been taught to appreciate diversity. These students may be at risk of dropping out of school or not realizing their potential.
