Abstract

This paper reexamines Brown and Levinson's theory of politeness and its application in subsequent studies and raises serious questions regarding its value for empirical studies. An alternative view of politeness is offered, and in light of this, a new approach to the analysis of Repair Work, placed within a more comprehensive framework of social interaction, is outlined. © 1995.
