Abstract

The capability of external chill in preventing hot tears ad shrinkage formation by accelerating the cooling rate in critical locations of aluminum permanent mold castings was investigated. An aluminum alloyA206 wheel comprising of a massive central hub, eight cross-sectioned spokes and rim was selected as the test casting for the study. Casting density distribution in the cross section of the hub area was used to qualitatively evaluate chill effectiveness in terms of internal porosity reduction. the results suggest that different degrees of reduction of porosity in shrinkage-prone areas may be possible by promoting sequential solidification in the PM castings of aluminum A-206.
