Abstract

In the spring of 1986 a group of readers with diverse interests and backgrounds (in American literature, speech and communication, text theories, religious studies, teaching of literature) got together in my Topics in Criticism class to debate recent reader oriented theories and their role in the classroom. Little did they know at the time that their enthusiasm and endurance as a "community of interpreters" would be put to test in a ten-week workshop on Henry James's short story " The Figure in the Carpet:' The papers gathered in this volume stand proof that their task was often suspenseful, but also that in the end each reader managed somehow to take control of the story and reemplot it in terms of his/her own interests and understanding.
