Abstract
As we examine and explore the programs that we will be developing in our agencies and organizations, one of the factors in the program development process is examining youth age characteristics. The developmental stages of youth have been examined in a variety of ways by educators and research analysts. We will explore the stages of youth development as taken from, The Primary Program: Growing and Learning in the Heartland (1993). This is a primary level education curriculum developed by the Iowa Department of Education, Iowa Area Education Agencies and the Nebraska Office of Child Development-Department of Education.
The Primary Program curriculum divides the developmental stages of youth into several categories. Categories include Aesthetic and Artistic Development, Emotional and Social Development, Intellectual Development, Physical Development, and the Development of Responsibility. These categories are each divided into age categories, and then common traits of youth in that developmental category are presented.
