Abstract
Programs should be developed with specific benefits, values and goals in mind. For it is only through an underlying commitment to fostering these benefits that they will be achieved. With this in mind some staff might respond by saying "This all seems a bit heavy! I thought our programs were supposed to be fun." Fun and goal oriented programming can be synonymous if staff understand the role of Creating Constructive Chaos for participants in our programs.
In working with youth we are quite familiar with the concept of chaos. In fact, there are times when chaos seems to reign no matter our efforts. Confusion, jumbles, snarls, and muddles are elements found in all aspects of programming. It is up to us as youth workers to create constructive chaos out of that which exists in abundance. It is futile and of little importance for adults to dictate order and calm among youngsters. Their natural energies and curiosities, the playful elements of childhood, demand some chaos.
