Abstract

The Institute for Youth Leaders' 1992 National Youth Leadership Symposium contributed to the emerging youth development profession and attending academic discipline through a formal examination of the principles of moving " theory into practice." This theme was selected as the next step in a logical sequence of symposia themes. In 1990 the gathering established agreement on the critical competencies needed in youth development professional practice. The 1991 experience built on the set of competencies with the identification of common ground for professional development among the organizations serving the needs of youth. With agreement on the needed competencies and the common ground within which professional development may occur, the next step was to begin to focus on moving relevant theories into professional practice. This examination was both a discovery of the elements of theory and practice that are needed within the field and an effort to improve understanding of the importance of basing practice on relevant theory. Participants actively engaged a planned educational process through which the elements were examined and reflected upon in order to establish personal meanings and enhance learning. The analysis of the experience and recommendations for action on organizational and professional levels are presented here as a reporting of outcomes of the Symposium and opportunities for the future action of the Institute.
